Things To Do in Boone NC This Fall Weekend

Colorful fall foliage lining King Street in downtown Boone NC on a crisp October afternoon

October in the High Country Is Something Special

There's a reason people drive hours to spend a weekend in Boone every October. The Blue Ridge Parkway is ablaze with color, the air has that perfect bite to it, and the whole town feels alive with energy. Growing up with family roots in Valle Crucis going back to 1978, I've experienced a lot of High Country autumns — and I'll tell you honestly, they never get old. Whether you're a first-time visitor or someone who's been making the drive up from Charlotte or Raleigh for years, this is the weekend to be here.

With Halloween just 29 days away, the High Country is leaning fully into the season. Pumpkins line the porches along Bamboo Road in Valle Crucis, the smell of apple cider drifts out of every roadside stand, and downtown Boone's King Street is decked out and ready for foot traffic. Here's a look at what's worth your time this weekend — and why so many visitors eventually decide they want more than just a weekend.

Outdoor Adventures Worth Getting Off the Couch For

Peak fall color in the High Country typically runs through mid-October, which means right now is your window. A few must-do options this weekend:

  • Blue Ridge Parkway drives — The stretch near Rough Ridge and Linn Cove Viaduct is stunning this time of year. Pull over at the Rough Ridge overlook and you'll understand immediately why people want to own mountain property NC.
  • Hiking Grandfather Mountain — The Mile High Swinging Bridge with fall foliage in every direction is genuinely one of the best views in the eastern United States. Go early to beat the crowd.
  • Valle Crucis Community Park — A quieter, local gem perfect for families. The Watauga River runs right alongside it, and the fall colors reflecting off the water are worth the short drive from downtown Boone.
  • Apple picking at Mast Farm Inn area orchards — Valle Crucis and the surrounding coves are apple country. Stop in at the Original Mast General Store while you're out that way — it's been there since 1883 and still earns every bit of its reputation.

If you're into cycling, the gravel roads threading through the Elk and New River valleys offer some of the most rewarding fall riding in the Southeast. Rent a bike, pack a layer, and go explore.

Local Events and Dining This Weekend

Boone's downtown restaurant scene has grown considerably over the past several years, and fall weekends tend to showcase it at its best. Grab breakfast at a local spot on King Street before the leaf-lookers arrive, or make a dinner reservation somewhere along the corridor — spots fill up fast on October weekends, so plan ahead.

Keep an eye on the Appalachian State University events calendar as well. App State football games create an electric atmosphere around town, and the Kidd Brewer Stadium tailgate scene spills out into the surrounding neighborhoods in a way that gives you a real feel for community life here. For anyone considering Appalachian State housing options — whether you're a parent looking at buying near campus or a buyer interested in the rental market — a game-day visit is genuinely revealing.

The Watauga County Farmers Market, held Saturday mornings, is a High Country tradition worth setting an alarm for. Local honey, hand-thrown pottery, mountain grown produce, and baked goods from folks who've been showing up every week for decades. It's the kind of thing that reminds you why people fall in love with this place and start asking about Boone NC real estate.

Why Fall Visitors Become Buyers

I switched careers and moved back to Boone full-time in 2020, and I hear a version of the same story constantly: someone visits for a fall weekend, has the time of their life, drives home Sunday evening, and spends the next six months wondering why they don't just own something up here.

The High Country real estate market remains active and competitive heading into fall 2026. Inventory has tightened across most price points — from entry-level condos near campus to larger mountain retreats with long-range views. If you've been thinking about making a move, whether it's a primary residence, a second home, or an investment property, the time to get serious is before spring competition kicks back in. As a High Country REALTOR who lives and works here full-time, I can tell you that the buyers who do their homework in the fall tend to be best positioned when the right property comes available.

If your goal is to buy a home in Boone NC — or somewhere in the surrounding High Country communities like Banner Elk, Blowing Rock, or Valle Crucis — a fall weekend visit is one of the best research trips you can take. You get to experience the area at its most beautiful, yes, but you also get a real feel for what daily life looks like when the weather turns and the tourist crowds thin out a bit.
