Things to Do in Boone NC This Weekend | Fall 2026

Fall foliage along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Boone, NC with colorful autumn leaves and mountain views

Fall Is Here — And Boone Is Showing Off

If you've been waiting for the right moment to visit Boone, NC, this weekend is it. We're sitting right at the sweet spot of early fall — temperatures in the mid-60s during the day, crisp nights that beg for a fire, and the first serious hints of color beginning to roll across the ridgelines. Give it another week or two and the Blue Ridge Parkway will be absolutely electric. But right now? Right now you get the color and the elbow room.

I was born here, my family has had a place in Valle Crucis since 1978, and I moved back for good in 2020. I've watched a lot of fall seasons unfold in the High Country. This one feels especially vibrant. Whether you're a longtime visitor, a first-timer, or someone quietly wondering what it might look like to buy a home in Boone NC, this weekend is a genuinely great place to start.

What's Happening This Weekend in the High Country

Boone and the surrounding area pack a lot into a fall weekend. Here's a look at what's on tap:

  • App State Football: The Mountaineers are in action at Kidd Brewer Stadium this weekend. Game day on King Street is an experience unto itself — the energy rolls through the whole town, local restaurants fill up fast, and there's a sense of community pride that's hard to describe until you've felt it. If you're exploring Appalachian State housing options or just want to see what game-day Boone feels like, this is your weekend.
  • Downtown Boone Art Crawl: The monthly Art Crawl continues through the fall, with galleries, studios, and pop-up vendors spread across the downtown district. Start on King Street and let yourself wander. You'll find local painters, jewelry makers, photographers capturing these very mountains, and plenty of spots to grab a coffee or a craft beer along the way.
  • Blue Ridge Parkway Drives: The Parkway is free, always open to pedestrians and cyclists, and completely stunning right now. Pull off at the Rough Ridge overlook or head toward Price Park for a short hike with panoramic views. It doesn't cost a thing and it's the single best way to understand why people fall in love with this place.
  • Valle Crucis Community Park & Mast General Store: Head down NC-105 to Valle Crucis for a slower, more pastoral version of the High Country experience. The original Mast General Store — open since 1883 — is worth the trip on its own. The community park along the Watauga River is quiet, scenic, and a reminder of why so many families, including mine, have been coming to this valley for generations.
  • Farmers Market at Horn in the West: Local vendors, fresh mountain produce, handmade goods, and a genuine sense of place. Get there early for the best selection, grab some apple butter, and talk to the people who grow food on these slopes for a living.

Dining and Drinks Worth Planning Around

Boone's food scene has grown considerably in recent years, and fall is a great time to explore it. Proper on King Street is a local favorite for elevated comfort food with a thoughtful wine list. Gamekeeper Restaurant, just outside of town on Shulls Mill Road, offers a genuinely special farm-to-table experience with wild game and locally sourced ingredients — make a reservation, especially on weekends. For something more casual, Booneshine Brewing Company has the kind of laid-back patio energy that pairs perfectly with a cool September evening.

And yes, Halloween is 43 days out. Boone does autumn and Halloween exceptionally well — the decorations are already starting to appear on King Street, and local events will ramp up quickly. If you've never been here for the fall season in full swing, you're missing something special.

Why Fall Is a Smart Time to Explore Boone NC Real Estate

Here's where I'll put on my REALTOR hat for a moment — because if you're visiting this weekend and finding yourself thinking I could really see myself here, that feeling is worth paying attention to.

Fall is one of the most strategic times to explore Boone NC real estate seriously. The summer rush has settled, inventory tends to shift, and motivated sellers are often more willing to have real conversations. As a High Country REALTOR who lives and works here full-time, I consistently see buyers who do their initial research in the fall make some of their best decisions — they've seen the area at its most beautiful, they've talked to locals, and they're thinking clearly rather than rushing.

Mountain property in NC — whether that's a cabin with acreage, a downtown condo near App State, a second home in Valle Crucis, or a building lot with long-range views — moves differently than flatland real estate. Elevation, road access, well and septic systems, and seasonal considerations all matter. Working with someone who knows this market deeply, and who has personal roots here, makes a real difference in finding the right property rather than just any property.

The High Country market remains active and competitive for desirable properties. If you've been thinking about making a move, fall 2026 is a worthwhile time to get educated and get serious.
